Approximately 4 years ago, I was referred by my rheumatologist for physical therapy for chronic back pain related to Degenerative Disc Disease. The pain greatly limited my ability to engage in active life and would routinely wake me up in the middle of the night, requiring me to get up and sit in a chair for an extended period prior to returning to bed. An uninterrupted night’s sleep was a rare occurrence. When I completed physical therapy, my therapist recommended that I consider Pilates to build on the progress I had made. He specifically recommended the Pilates Fitness Center (PFC) and Linda Roberts. She is a physical therapist, and he was confident that she could be helpful to me. Helpful doesn’t capture it! Over the past 4 years, I have gained significant core strength which, in turn, has greatly helped my back. I am now pain free and can engage fully in physical activities. I have come to appreciate a sound night’s sleep as a precious gift from God. My balance and posture have also greatly improved, and I feel strong and well.
I must also share another experience I had at PFC. I was enrolled for a time in a Barre class. At the time, I was struggling with persistent bursitis in my hip that was very painful. One day Kim Jackson, the instructor, led a class designed to “open up our hips.” The next day I noticed that the pain from my bursitis was gone from my hip for the first time in months. I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t say anything to anyone for several days for fear the bursitis would return, but it hasn’t! On occasion, I get a hint that the bursitis is threatening to return, but I engage in the same exercises that we did in Barre class and the pain relents. I don’t have words to say how grateful I am for the health benefits I have gained through Pilates. I had forgotten what life was like when I didn’t hurt. In many ways, Pilates gave me my life back. The instructors at PFC are incredible – I can’t say enough! Too grateful for words.
Over three years ago I had a total hip replacement and I was very nervous about falling.
After starting my Pilates over two years ago, I’m no longer afraid of falling! I absolutely
feel better and I can do things like lean over and pick up a newspaper in my driveway
with ease. That may not sound like a bid deal to most people, unless you can’t do it!
Pilates will be a part of my life from now on!
